Definition of depression

Types of depression
According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM – V), currently there are 9 distinct types of depression.
Major depression is the most common type of depression. in this type you feel depressed most of the time for most days of the week. Thought of suicide, feeling guilty, loss of interest in your activities these are some causes of major depression.
Persistent depressive disorder
Persistent depressive disorder is also dysthymia. It is characterized by a persistent low mood occurring for at least two years or more. Sadness, lack of interest, guilt, anger, insomnia these are the symptoms of dysthymia.
It is a subtype of major depression or dysthymic disorder .it can be a "specified” either major depression or dysthymic disorder. It is characterized by heaviness in the limbs, irritability, relationship issues, oversleeping and overeating.
Bipolar depression is also known as manic depressive disorder associated with episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs.
Psychotic depression is a subtype of major depression that occurs when a severe depressive illness includes some form of psychosis. Psychotic depression episodes are characterized by depressive episodes with hallucinations, delusions, and being catatonic.
Postpartum depression is a lot more powerful and lasts longer. It follows about 15 percent of births, in first-time moms and those who’ve given birth before. Some mothers experience postpartum depression for several months after giving birth.
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder: Premenstrual Dysphoric disorder occurs in the second half of the menstrual cycle, affecting the person’s ability to function normally.
Situational Depression: Situational depression is a form of depression that’s triggered by a life-changing, sometimes unexpected, event, such as death of a close family member or losing a job.
Symptoms of Depression
The most common mental health concerns are related to depression. These are often experienced as complex disorders that include both mental and physical symptoms and challenges functioning in everyday life. Symptoms of depression are as follows.
